Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does The Rip Monkey™ only support PowerFile R200 MFX libraries?

A: The Rip Monkey currently supports PowerFile libraries connected to Mac OS X hosts running the MediaFinder X software. All varieties of PowerFIle library supported by MediaFinder X are compatible with The Rip Monkey. These includes the PowerFile R200, R200S, and C200 libraries.

Q: How long should I expect the import process to take?

A: Two factors determine how quickly the import will be done: changer data extraction rate and CPU audio file conversion rate. The overall disc import speed will be the lower of these two rates.

The PowerFile R200 MFX changer is capable of extracting data from Audio CD's at a speed of about 13-14 discs/hour. If you connect two changers, this number will be doubled.

A PowerMac G5 dual 2.0GHz is capable of converting approximately 23-25 discs per hour to MP3 or AAC file format (this rate is much higher for AIFF or WAV files, since no compression is required).

Therefore, connecting one changer to a PowerMac G5 will result in an import rate of approximately 13-14 discs/hour (limited by the speed of the changer). Connect two changers and the import rate will increase to 23-25 discs/hour (limited by the speed of the PowerMac's CPU). Connecting a third changer will not increase the import rate, but will allow more discs to be imported in one job.

Examples of approximate times required for importing 96 discs with various changer configurations:
96 discs in 1 changer 7 hours
96 discs in 2 changers (48 in each) 4 hours
96 discs in 3 changers (32 in each) 4 hours
(examples are using PowerMac G5 dual-2.0GHz and PowerFile R200 MFX changers)

Q: How much drive space is required for importing 200 discs?

A: Total drive space required depends on the file encoder and settings chosen in iTunes.

Here are some approximate storage requirements:
128kbps MP3 or AAC 56.5MB per disc
192kbps MP3 or AAC 84.5MB per disc
Apple Lossless 265.0MB per disc
AIFF or WAV (uncompressed) 530.0MB per disc

Q: What output file formats are supported?

A: Since The Rip Monkey uses iTunes to convert files, all file formats supported by iTunes may be used by The Rip Monkey. These include AAC, AIFF, Apple Lossless, MP3, and WAV. iTunes also supports additional importers via a plug-in system, so other file formats may be implemented by third party vendors.
